Role:

As a Principal Technical Lead in the Embodied AI organization, you will be a senior individual contributor driving cutting-edge end-to-end machine learning solutions directly impacting autonomous driving performance. Your role is pivotal in designing, architecting, and deploying advanced ML models to reliably and safely navigate diverse real-world scenarios and conditions. You'll lead critical technical initiatives, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, mentor ML engineers, and significantly shape the future of onboard ML capabilities.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and implement technologies that align our models to GM’s mission.
  • Apply techniques such as unsupervised pre-training, imitation learning, reinforcement learning, guidance, and selection to raise the performance of our models and provide a layer safety and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate & align distillation recipes of foundation models for onboard driving models.
  • Conduct research and stay updated on the latest advancements in AI frameworks and libraries.
  • Lead projects from ideation to deployment, documenting learnings and best practices along the way.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Your Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science with a focus in Robotics and or Machine Learning, or a related field.
  • Proven experience working with large-scale Foundation Models and alignment methods to translate research into real-world impact.
  • Proven experience delivering applied research in the wild and maintaining best practices while working on tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in frameworks such as PyTorch and languages such as python.
  • Proven experience in building and scaling large model training pipelines that are performant and enable quick iteration by distributed teams.
  • Strong data processing skills using tools like Numpy, Pandas, and Apache Spark.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience deploying foundation models into production environments and understanding the end-to-end process.
  • Previous experience in Robotics or Autonomous Driving.

Remote:This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford or Mountain View, you are expected to report to that location three times per week, at minimum.

  • Mentor Staff and Senior engineers across teams, raising the bar on technical judgment, design quality, and execution discipline without direct people management responsibilities.
  • Improve and deliver reliable software through continuous integration, automated testing, and code reviews.
  • Develop and oversee top-tier software engineers within a dynamic, fast-paced, and inclusive setting.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D., M.S. in controls, optimization, path planning, or related. B.S. with strong work experience in the field may be considered

Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically adept Senior Engineering Manager - AI/ML Engineering to lead our Data Foundations teams within the Embodied AI organization. This is a people leadership role with technical depth. You will be instrumental in shaping the future of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) development by setting the vision for and leading a dedicated team that owns the data flywheel for continuously improving GM’s Foundation AV model performance.  You will manage senior AI/ML Engineers and Engineering Managers, set the technical vision of the Data Scaling teams, collaborate with and set direction for partner teams across the organization. About the Team:

The Data Scaling group owns the Data Flywheel for AV Foundation model development and successive fine tuning. It defines the composition of the data that is needed for the AV to learn behaviors at scale and deliver the driving behaviors necessary for the product success. The team owns the definition and processes for data quality across the data loop.

The team directly works on and delivers ML models to the product that successively go up the Data Scaling curves, thereby improving AV performance through smart use of data. As part of this work, the team builds scalable systems and pipelines that attempt to 10x the data used, its diversity and impact on the models with successive major releases. The team uses existing very large datasets that GM has access to internally as well as defines the next generation of highest value datasets that GM continues to collect – both from real driving by GM and retail fleets, but also synthetic sim-based datasets.

The Ideal Candidate:

We are seeking a motivated and innovative ECU Hardware Safety Analysis Engineer to lead circuit-level safety analysis efforts and help define and enhance internal safety analysis methodologies for in-house designed ECUs.

In this role, you will perform detailed circuit-level electronics safety assessments that support the overall System Safety Case for ECUs within a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) electrical architecture. Your contributions will play a critical role in advancing technologies aligned with General Motors’ Vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience conducting DFMEA at both the ECU and circuit levels, along with a strong technical foundation in hardware safety analysis. You are a proactive leader who drives innovation, fosters collaboration, and communicates complex technical concepts clearly across cross-functional teams. Success in this role requires strong business acumen, the ability to navigate ambiguity, and a strategic mindset to address system-level challenges. A passion for continuous learning and a commitment to challenging conventional approaches are essential.

The Role:

Safety is truly in your hands, as your passion for safe mobility will be key in ensuring the functional safety of our inhouse developed ECUs for our latest vehicle architecture.  In this role you are expected to have a high level of technical proficiency to perform various ECU, sub-component and circuit level safety analysis tasks that supports various SDV ECUs, and provide mentoring to more junior engineers.  This team will function in the capacity of performing the required safety analysis within an ECU design responsible organization where work products will be delivered to the System Functional Safety organization to meet the overall system safety case and safety goals of the ECU.  This team will interface across various GM engineering disciplines as well as external engineering entities to obtain needed information for the required safety analysis work.

What You’ll Do:

  • Perform ECU circuit level safety analysis, hazard identification and risk mitigations using qualitative and quantitative methods on a multitude of ECUs.
  • Support ECU Safety strategy development and deploy safety strategies that balance overall System Safety with feature availability & performance.
  • Perform detailed ECU circuit level safety analysis using various software analysis & documentation tools in the following areas:
  • DFMEA (Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis)
  • FIT (Failures In Time)
  • FMEDA (Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis)
  • FTA (Fault Tree Analysis)
  • Drive ECU, sub-component and/or circuit level design modifications determined necessary from the safety analysis work performed.
  • Support development of new and/or revise existing technical safety related requirements for ECU CTRS (Component Technical Requirements Specification).
  • Actively lead, participate and contribute in System Safety GSSLT (Global Subsystem Leadership Team), ECU HW Change Control Board and ECU safety analysis Peer Review forums.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and safety analysis techniques.
  • Domestic and/or international travel as required (minimal, 10% max).

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • 7+ years engineering experience in product development with safety critical systems, ECUs or electronic circuit safety analysis.
  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related Engineering degree.
  • Electronic Circuit and/or Software design, analysis, development, validation experience.
  • Deep knowledge of safety critical embedded controls with at least one automotive subsystem or experience with a complex safety system in other industries.
  • Good knowledge of Semiconductor physics, structures, fundamentals, models and failure mechanisms.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management of complex technical projects.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to diverse global teams.
  • ISO 26262 Certified Safety Expert

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • 10+ years engineering experience in product development with safety critical systems, ECUs or electronic circuit safety analysis.
  • In-depth familiarity with other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.
  • Familiarity with safety analysis tools, techniques and standards:
  • Mentor or Cadence tool suite used in electronics design
  • Medini or Plato-e1ns or other analysis/documentation tool for DFMEA
  • Medini, Isograph, Fault Tree + or other analysis tool for FMEDA / FTA
  • Siemens SN29500, IEC 62380 or other reliability standards for FIT rate analysis
  • Emerging safety standards such as ISO 21448 and UL 4600
  • Knowledge of electronics sub-component mechanical design integration within ECUs as it relates to circuit implementation reliability and failure mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with common safety mechanisms implemented in Automotive ECU's
  • Machine learning, simulation methods and data acquisition.
